Held under the beautiful oak trees surrounding the Courthouse Square, local downtown eateries will feature an assortment of breakfast menu items for sale, from coffee and pastries to breakfast casseroles and specialty dishes. Local downtown spots include Java Square, Chicorys at the Palace, Back in Time, and more.  A parade organized by the Original Southwest Zydeco Festival will also roll down Landry Street during the breakfast event.  The parade begins at 10 a.m. at the eastern entrance of the city on Wallior and Landry Streets.

One of the most influential accordionists and vocalists in modern Zydeco music, Jeffery Broussard has a range seldom seen in Zydeco – from playing traditional songs from the old masters to originals. The zydeco musician grew up on a farm in the rural community of Frilot Cove, Louisiana, where his father was a sharecropper. At the age of 8 years, he started playing drums in his father’s band, the renowned Delton Broussard & The Lawtell Playboys.  During his teen years, Jeffery played drums in his brother Clinton’s band, Clinton Broussard & The Zydeco Machines.  It was in this band that Jeffery played the accordion in public for the first time.

Jeffery would move on to become a leading member in Zydeco Force, an influential band at the forefront of the nouveau zydeco movement. Today, he plays with his own band, Jeffery Broussard and The Creole Cowboys.

The annual downtown Zydeco Breakfast takes place on the Saturday of Labor Day weekend and is held in conjunction with the Original Southwest Louisiana Zydeco Music Festival which returns this year to the Yambilee Building in Opelousas. Festival entertainment this year includes Chubby Carrier & the Bayou Swamp Band, Geno Delafose & French Rockin’ Boogie. Corey Ledet, Mike Broussard & Nu Edition Zydeco, Jeremy Fruge & The Zydeco Hot Boyz and Rusty Metoyer & Zydeco Krush.

Opelousas Tourism, with support from Opelousas Main Street, Inc., the City of Opelousas, and St. Landry Parish Government hosts the free event each year to get people excited about the Labor Day festival music and activities, as well as to bring awareness of the downtown district.

Attendees of the Zydeco Breakfast are encouraged to bring their lawn chairs and enjoy the entertainment in a relaxed and charming setting in the heart of downtown Opelousas.  For more information about the City of Opelousas Zydeco Breakfast, follow @OpelousasTravel on Facebook or call 800-524-5442 or visit www.cityofopelousas.com For a complete list of event information for the Original Southwest Zydeco Festival, visit www.zydeco.org
