St. Landry Parish Clerk of Court Charles Jagneaux is announcing the continued exhibition in April for a popular parish wide traveling historic exhibit which has been presented to historic African-American church congregations since February.

Jagneaux also said that he plans later this month to present two separate original framed documents detailing the early histories at Holy Ghost Catholic Church and Mount Olive Baptist Church in Opelousas.

The historic exhibits which have been enthusiastically received and viewed already in 10 churches this year displays the histories of families that have helped shape the culture and socio-economic makeup for nearly three centuries in St. Landry Parish.

“Due to the incredible response that we have had by placing the exhibits at churches on Sunday for viewing over the past two months, we felt it was necessary to expose other congregants to this wonderful piece of research,” Jagneaux said.

Jagneaux added that at this point he plans to continue displaying indefinitely the colorful photos and family information contained in each of the exhibits.

Parish archivist Alex Lee has been responsible for collecting information available in the Clerk of Court archives to create the several collage displays for viewing, Jagneaux said.

The documents associated with Holy Ghost and Mount Olive churches were discovered among Clerk of Court archival material available for discovery, Jagneaux said.

“This material pertaining to the origins of both Holy Ghost and Mount Olive provides source material for each of the churches. At Holy Ghost the original sale of property to create a church at Holy Ghost has been uncovered. At Mount Olive we plan to present the church there with the original church charter,” Jagneaux said.
