In this article on firearms safety, we will discuss the topic of Proper Handling of a Firearm. If you do not properly handle and respect a firearm, there are no second chances. You and others must ALWAYS adhere to all the safety rules, your life may depend on it.

First off follow all the gun and range safety rules. Alcohol and/or drugs should never be consumed and/or used when handling or will be handling firearms. My training staff has a saying, alcohol and gun powder does not mix!!

Check and see if the gun is unloaded as soon as you pick up a firearm.

If you are handling a firearm, never point the barrel towards the person. On semi-autos take the magazine out and lock the slide back first. On revolvers, open the cylinder and then hand the firearm to the person. Ask questions about the firearm before you handle it.

Do not hover over a shooter, give them space. This is not only irritating but a safety issue. The shooter could have a weapon malfunction or faulty ammunition that could harm you.

Do not horse play with a firearm.

Never clean your firearm in the same room your ammunition is and use only approved gun cleaning supplies.

Never pick up someone’s firearm without asking, some firearm enthusiasts “work” on their own guns and alter it. Ask to see it and if allowed ALWAYS perform a safety check.

NEVER leave a firearm unattended.

Shoot one firearm at a time so you can concentrate on the safe and proper handling of that particular firearm.

Lastly and one I think is the most important is EDUCATE yourself and your children. I hope this series has reminded you of the importance of safety when it comes to dealing with firearms. Many times injuries and sometimes fatal incidents occur due to the lack of respect, the improper handling of firearms, and the lack of educating ourselves on firearms safety.
