St. Landry Historic Gallery and Clerk of Court Office Recognize Donation of Historic
Lafleur Cotton Gin Painting
Opelousas, Louisiana — The St. Landry Historic Gallery, through the St. Landry Parish Clerk
of Court Charles Jagneaux and curated by Parish Archivist Larry Caillier II, proudly announces
the donation of a significant historical painting depicting the Lafleur Cotton Gin located in
Swords, Louisiana.
This meaningful contribution was generously donated by Mr. and Mrs. Mike Miller, whose
commitment to preserving the rich heritage of St. Landry Parish is deeply appreciated. The
painting, created in 1985 by noted local artist Mrs. Anna Lois Cary, captures an important piece
of the parish’s agricultural and industrial history.
The Lafleur Cotton Gin itself holds historic significance, having been purchased in 1945 by
Furdy Lafleur from the Swords Cooperative Gin, Inc. The gin played a vital role in the local
cotton economy and stands as a symbol of the region’s agricultural legacy.
“This donation represents more than just a work of art—it is a preservation of our shared
history,” said Clerk of Court Charles Jagneaux of the St. Landry Historic Gallery. “We are
grateful to Mr. and Mrs. Miller for ensuring that this piece remains accessible to the public for
generations to come.”
