When it came to executing the St. Landry Parish Track Meet relay events, Northwest High was clearly dominant.
The Raiders won seven of the eight baton exchanges, a performance that enabled the program to capture both boys and girls first place varsity trophies last Thursday night at Donald Gardner Stadium.
Northwest performed perfectly in the boys’ relays division, while the Raiders’ girls took all but one of the events.
Those efforts helped Northwest compile a first-place 162 points, while the girls finished with 107, just ahead of second-place Beau Chene (104). Opelousas High was third (98).
The Westminster Christian boys finished a distant second (108), while North Central was third in the male division with 99.
Opelousas Junior High was a double team winner in the junior high school division.
How It Happened
In addition to the 40 relays’ points, the Raiders’ boys also exhibited the best individual speed.
Northwest claimed first places from Keon Johnson (100 meters), Keithan Vidito (400 meters), Kaedon Jenkins (800 meters) and Jayden Lazard (200 meters).
There were also key points for the Raiders’ boys in the field.
Kylone Grandigo (shot put), Sherman James (high jump) and Frederick Nimer (discus) also produced first places for Northwest.
The Northwest girls received first place running events points from Zaria White (100 meters), Arielle Lazard (400 meters) and Harmony Richard (200 meters).
Other Top Performances
In the girls’ running events, Westminster Christian Academy middle and long distance runner Magnolia Henrich became the only individual triple winner at the meet.
Henrich won the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 meters to provide 30 of the 104 points for the Crusaders’ girls.
WCA teammate Myjah Wilson scored a pair of first place jumping event wins. Wilson took the long jump (16-9) and the high jump (4-8).
Beau Chene field event competitor Keiara Green won first places in the shot put and javelin.
Westminster long distance runner Chisom Okechukwu took a 1,600 meters first place before finishing second in the 3,200 meters.
