Veteran educator and community volunteer Janice Henry was chosen as the interim District 3 board member during a special Tuesday night meeting of the St. Landry Parish School Board.

Henry, who has taught mathematics and special education in St. Landry and Acadia parishes received nine of the 12 votes necessary to replace Milton Ambres, who died earlier this month following an extended illness.

Board members questioned Henry and candidate Keith Scott after each made presentations which were part of the selection process.

The selection of Henry however is temporary, since Ambres was scheduled to relinquish his seat after the November election due to term limits.

Scott, who works as a middle school administrator in St.Martin Parish, received votes from Bianca Vedell, Raymond Cassimere and Anthony Standberry.

Mary Ellen Donatto, Tammika Hardy, Tiffany Nolan, Hazel Sias, Kyle Boss, Robert Gautreaux, Joyce Haynes and board president Randy Wagley voted for Henry.

Scott told board members that he understands the overall financial situation of the District and that he planned to connect in an active manner with District 3 constituents in order to have their voices recognized.

His St.Martin position Scott said would not prevent him from attending meetings.

Henry said that she was familiar with Opelousas since she has volunteered for events associated with Holy Ghost Catholic Church, the parish sexual assault centers and other organizations.

Her employment in education, said Henry, spanned 26 years.

Both Scott and Henry said they plan to run for the District 3 seat in November.
