The non-profit Heaven’s Kitchen launched their very first fundraising event with a Crawfish Étouffée plate lunch on Sunday, March 17th. It was more than luck on their side that made the event a success!
Although it started off as a rainy day, that didn’t stop the cars from coming in as people drove through to pick up their plate lunches that were pre-purchased through the organization’s fundraising event. With an initial goal of 200 plate lunches, the organization successfully met this as they completely sold out thanks to the outpouring of support from the community.
Serving Up Compassion
Chef Donavan Lewis of BLAQ89 South Catering was the featured Guest Chef who prepared Crawfish Étouffée over rice. Chef Lewis was inspired to participate in the event to support Heaven’s Kitchen’s mission through his passion in cooking and making a positive impact to his community.

Volunteers showed up ready to serve, preparing plates, collecting tickets and distributed the dinners as buyers drove through for pickup. The cars lined up around the block from Franklin Street to pick up their dinners from Benny’s Supermarket, which hosted the Crawfish Étouffée sale for Heaven’s Kitchen.
The event is just the first of many as Heaven’s Kitchen will host these quarterly plate lunches to serve as the primary source of income to support the Stepping Stones Fund.
The next plate lunch sale is set for June 9, 2024. After seeing great success with their first plate lunch sale the organization aims to sell more for their next fundraiser so be on the lookout for updates to come. To learn more about this mission, visit Heavenskitchenslp.org.
