Ulysse Joubert was honored and remembered Friday at Park Vista Elementary where he served as school principal for 35 years. He began his 58 years in education at J.S. Clark and Opelousas Senior High before transferring into administration as principal at Opelousas Junior High and his beloved Park Vista Elementary.
A standing room only crowd was on hand in the PVE library to listen and watch as St. Landry Parish President Jessie Bellard and Opelousas Mayor Julius Alsandor presented proclamations to his wife, Glenda, and family members. After the proclamations were read Parish President Bellard announced that the Friday before Mardi Gras would be proclaimed as Deacon Ulysse Joubert Day in Opelousas. Joubert was the originator of the Park Vista Elementary Mardi Gras Parade which rolled through the subdivision on the Friday before Mardi Gras
Rachel Melancon, current principal at PVE, was one of the guest speakers as well as Chief Graig LeBlanc, Sheriff Bobby Guidroz, Easton Shelvin, Elbert Guillory, School Board Superintendent Milton Batiste Oop and Tyrone Glover, who was one of the organizers of the event.s Opening and closing prayers were conducted by Bishop Easton Shelvin and Elbert Guillory.
