The Opelousas Main Street program was recognized Tuesday night for national excellence during a presentation ceremony at the monthly Opelousas Board of Aldermen meeting,

Lavonya Malveaux, U.S. Congressional District 6 field representative for Cleo Fields, recognized Main Street executive director Melanie LeBouef and Opelousas Main Street organization members for becoming an accredited program that has become nationally-recognized.

Opelousas Main Street, Malveaux pointed out, is one of 19 nationally-accredited Main Street programs in Louisiana.

Main Street organizations are formed, Malveaux said, in order to help preserve the historic character of downtown areas.

Opelousas Main Street has been active in assisting downtown business owners with grant funding that helps with exterior beautification and upgrades.
