One brief review of a highlight tape was apparently all it took to sign Opelousas Catholic defensive back Roy Henry.
“I was on the phone with the coach from East Texas Baptist and while we were talking, he was looking at the tape of Roy. Before I hung up, the coach said they wanted him,” said OCS head football coach Cullen Matherne.
Henry finalized the interest in ETBU on Wednesday afternoon, as he signed a football scholarship in the OCS gymnasium.
ETBU, a four-year Division III program located in Marshall, Tx., contains a players roster of primarily Texas and Louisiana players.
Matherne thinks Henry will play cornerback for the Tigers.
“He is the best cornerback that I’ve coached. I went back on the film (of 2024) and teams threw at him 12 times and he intercepted four of those passes. (Henry) has a great football IQ,” Matherne said.
Matherne often staged one-on-one practice competitions between Henry and Vikings’ wide receiver Roderick Tezeno.
Those matchups were worhty of a highlight reel, Mathern said.
Tezeno, who has drawn Division 1 interest, often had challenges separating from Henry, who was covering him one-on-one, said Matherne.
“It would be close between us sometimes,” Tezeno said. “I know (Henry) is pretty quick and he’s also patient. He doesn’t have any problem squaring up with a receiver,” said Tezeno.
Henry said he plans to remain playing cornerback in college.
“I played man (throughout 2024) and it was always fun going against (Tezeno) in practice. I think he is the one who made me better by going toe to toe,” said Henry.
There were several colleges interested in Henry throughout the recruiting process, but none really captured his attention or a commitment until the ETBU offer.
“I was still talking to other colleges when I was contacted (by ETBU). I decided to commit to them. Then I went on a visit and after doing that, I decided to sign,” said Henry, who anticipates playing corner in college.
