An Opelousas police sergeant has been placed on administrative leave following his arrest and alleged involvement in an off-duty incident that occurred Sunday at the Evangeline Downs Racetrack and Casino, according to multiple sources.
Authorities said Romalis Otto Thomas, 39, turned himself in to the St. Landry Parish Sheriff Department after he was charged with one count of domestic abuse battery following an investigation by Louisiana State Police.
State police investigators, said authorities, obtained an arrest warrant for Thomas after an investigation was requested by Opelousas Police Chief Graig LeBlanc.
LeBlanc told authorities that Thomas will remain on administrative leave while the city police department conducts an internal investigation.
The investigation into the alleged incident should be considered ongoing, LeBlanc added.
