Parents Charged in Homicide of Two-Month-Old Infant

Investigators with the Opelousas Police Department Special Operations Division have arrested one suspect and are actively searching for another in connection with the death of a two-month-old infant reported on October 25, 2025, at approximately 8:09 p.m.

Officers responded to a medical emergency in the 200 block of N. Liberty Street, where they found the infant girl not breathing. Officers immediately began life-saving measures until paramedics arrived; however, upon arrival at a local hospital, the child was pronounced deceased.

Following the autopsy, investigators learned that the infant suffered severe neglect and physical abuse, including:

  • Extreme dehydration and malnourishment
  • Broken rib bones, some showing signs of healing
  • A severed lower spine, resulting in internal bleeding and ultimately, death

Through interviews, investigators identified the parents as Kaylee Fontenot and Taylor Broussard and learned that the child had been in their exclusive custody since birth.

Arrest warrants were obtained for both parents on the following charges:

  • First Degree Murder
  • Cruelty to Juveniles
  • Second Degree Battery

Investigators located and arrested Kaylee Fontenot, who is now in custody. Broussard remains at large, and investigators are actively searching for him. He is considered wanted on the charges listed above.
