U.S. military veterans from St. Landry Parish were recognized individually on Thursday as they each experienced a red carpet introduction during a sixth annual “Hats Off To Veterans” noon program held at the Yambilee Building.
The ranks for the approximately 50 honored veterans during their parade before invited guests, ranged from colonels to privates and included their branches of the military as well as the number of years that they served in the military.
A performance by the Magnet Academy of Cultural Arts under the direction of Marguerite Fontenot, was the featured entertainment highlight.
Dr. Jerome Buller, a deputy secretary and medical director for the Louisiana Department of Veterans Affairs, was the keynote speaker.
Buller, a 34-year military veteran, a medical specialist with several advanced degrees, framed his speech with reminders that Americans should never fail to acknowledge the sacrifices and service that the military requires.
All U.S servicemen experience what Buller called, “a steadfast devotion regardless of whether they served during peacetime or when America has been at war.”
Buller, a resident of Covington, also pointed out that military service unites a variety of individuals whether they originated from cities, small towns or rural areas.
Despite those diverse backgrounds, those in the military have managed to serve with honor, courage and dignity, Buller said.
Buller also pointed out that there are sacrifices that are attached to military service.
“Their service comes with significant costs. There is hardship and dangers, but along with that, comes our honor, respect and gratitude,” Bellard added.
As another Veteran’s Day approaches, Bellard said that it is again time for Americans to unite in honor of those that have served in the military.
“We must always remember them, stand by them and support them. Their legacy inspires us for future generations,” Buller noted.
