Pedestrian Safety and Interstate Highways
In our continuing series, “Did You Know?”, Sheriff Guidroz reminds us
of the laws concerning pedestrians and interstate highways.
Louisiana Revised Statute 32:216 (A) states; “Where sidewalks are
provided, it shall be unlawful for any pedestrian to walk along and
upon an adjacent highway.”
32:216 (B) states; “When sidewalks are not provided, any pedestrian
walking along and upon a highway shall, when practicable, walk only
on the left side of the highway or its shoulder, facing traffic which
may approach from the opposite direction.”
32:216 (C) states; “It shall be unlawful for any pedestrian to cross an
interstate highway, except in the case of an emergency.”
Pedestrians should also wear bright or reflective clothing during dim
light conditions and always at night.
Keeping our citizens safe is always our main concern. Should you
have information on any crime, call St. Landry Crime Stoppers at 948-
TIPS, or download our P3 app and “Tap the App” to “Say It Here” and
submit your anonymous tips.
On behalf of the St. Landry Crime Stoppers Board, the St. Landry
Parish Sheriff’s Office and Sheriff Bobby J. Guidroz, thank you and
have a blessed day.
