SWC Supports Garbage Decision

St. Landry Parish Solid Waste Commission members on Thursday reaffirmed a decision that interrupted parish wide garbage collections during the frigid weather last week.

The decision which halted St. Landry garbage pickups for all of last week, was made due to road and employee safety conditions, Disposal District executive director Richard LeBouef explained during an Administrative Committee meeting.

LeBouef said concerns over icy road conditions and Bayou State employee welfare were the main considerations for stopping all collections beginning throughout last week.

Notice about the garbage collection stoppage was provided on the SWC Facebook page, said LeBouef.

LeBouef added that only two negative comments in connection with the decision to stop the collections were posted on the Facebook page. LeBouef said he answered both of those posts.

“We had ice on the roads all over the parish and we really couldn’t get anywhere due to all the weather. I felt it was the right thing to do, putting safety first like we did,” LeBouef told the Committee.

LeBouef noted that parish officials were asking residents to stay home Tuesday and Wednesday.

“If the trucks went out there it would have been creating an unsafe situation for everyone,” said LeBouef.

Commission member Kathy Moreau said fully-loaded Bayou State trucks normally carry 80,000 pounds of garbage.

“Having trucks on the road with that much weight is really unsafe,” said Moreau.
