The Opelousas Woman’s Club, the oldest women’s organization in Opelousas, celebrated National Women’s History Month with an Open House, held at the groups club house on Bellevue Street last Thursday evening. With women from throughout the town, along with Mayor Julius Alsandor, in attendance, the women got to enjoy wine and hors D’oeuvres while visiting and learning about the century old Woman’s Club.

The Opelousas Woman’s Club has a long history of community service in Opelousas. What started as a Sewing Circle in 1913 became the Opelousas Woman’s Club in 1915, and joined the General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC) in 1918. But the roots of the club go back even further to 1907 when Opelousas women organized the Civic Circle of that time. Many of the same women who chartered that organization in 1907 later became charter members of the Opelousas Woman’s Club.

Mayor Julius Alsandor spoke to the group thanking them for their service to the city. He read a proclamation he signed designating March as Women’s History Month in Opelousas.

St. Landry Now was at the event documenting the evening in photographs.
