Accordion-playing truck driver has professional music skills

Accordion master Mark Ardoin leads the Zydeco Capital Jam from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 14 at the St. Landry Parish Visitor Center, I-49 exit 23, in Opelousas. Since February 2019, the jam has welcomed seasoned zydeco musicians and newcomers to play in St. Landry Parish, the cradle of Grammy winners Clifton Chenier, Rockin’ Sidney and Terrance Simien.

Ardoin, a truck driver who lives near Reeves, La., has become a regular participant since he first visited the jam in 2021. He first served as jam leader in August 2023.

“The Zydeco Capital Jam has unearthed some hidden gems,” said Herman Fuselier, executive director of the St. Landry Parish Tourist Commission. “There are musicians out there who just play at home for family, friends or their own enjoyment.

“But they’re good enough to have their own bands or have more skills than some professionals. Mark Ardoin is at the top of that hidden gem list. His passion for the music and culture comes out every time he pulls that accordion.”

Raised in Elton, La. in a family of self-taught accordionists, Ardoin has been playing since the age of 3. Mark and his brothers learned on their father’s Acadian accordion, made by pioneer builder Marc Savoy of Eunice.

Ardoin was one of the featured artists at the International Creole Jam held Nov. 30 at Lakeview Park and Beach in Eunice.

The Zydeco Capital Jam has free admission and is open to all musicians and fans. For more information, visit the St. Landry Parish Tourist Commission web site at cajuntravel.com
