The Downtown Opelousas coffee shop, Java Square Cafe re-opening took place on Friday morning with a ribbon cutting ceremony by the Chamber of Commerce.

Several members of the community and neighboring businesses came out to show their support for owners Carlos and Ashley Lerma, while enjoying specials on the freshly brewed up beverages with drip coffee for just $1, double loyalty points for reward members, and special discounts throughout the day.

The Java Square re-opening comes after the first phase of remodeling for the cafe and offers a refreshing new look for the establishment. Carlos, who is committed to his community and the preservation of the building’s history plans to include photographs in the remodel showcasing the original building as well as other photographs of Opelousas.

Carlos says the upstairs space, which is still undergoing the remodel, will continue to serve as a conference room that can be reserved for use to hold meetings and special events. He hopes to also create an area with this space where patrons can gather and connect in a comfortable atmosphere.

With the re-opening of the cafe, Java Square also unveiled the newly updated logo for the business. The rebranding of the coffee shop aims to represent who they are and is a reflection of their heart for the community, creating an inviting space for everyone to gather, work, and connect.

Java Square’s remodel is not yet complete, but the first phase has noticeably revitalized the nearly 100-year old building. The remodel serves as a restoration and rehabilitation of the historic building’s structure which includes the walls, ceilings, floors, and windows.

The two-story brick building was originally constructed in 1927 as the Parish Bank and Trust Company located across the street from the historic St. Landry Courthouse. It was re-opened in 2012 as Java Square Cafe, maintaining the integrity of the original structure including the bank’s original vault which now functions as a seating area.

The vault brings a distinct quality to the cafe and has attracted the attention of patrons and functioned as an ideal photo opp for many occasions such as Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. Later this month the cafe will host a new event that showcases this distinct feature with Vault Readings. The event is in partnership with Chustz Summer Camp for story time sessions offering a fun summer activity for kids.

The coffee shop owners are excited with the new change the coffee shop brings and efforts to help make a positive impact on economic growth in the community.

Enjoying the refreshing new summer drinks at Java Square!
