Opelousas police are continuing to investigate a nightclub shooting that resulted in multiple injuries and involved the arrests of two Breaux Bridge men early Monday morning.
A confrontation between two groups involving a female apparently led to shots being fired outside Club Heels on East Vine and Academy streets, Opelousas police chief Graig LeBlanc said on Tuesday.
That initial dispute, which began after 2 am, allegedly continued escalating and resulted in the arrests of Dwayne Carmouche, 26 and Nelson Landry Jr. 44, who were booked into the St. Landry Parish, police reports indicate.
Carmouche is charged according to police reports, with attempted second degree murder, aggravated assault with a fire arm, felon in possession of a firearm, obstruction of justice and battery.
The charges against Landry, the report also said, include principal to attempted second degree murder, felon in possession of a firearm, simple battery and sexual battery.
LeBlanc said during a telephone interview that the two suspects were apprehended not far from the area where the argument and gunshots occurred.
“We always have increased (officer) presence at the time when the club is letting out. That’s what allowed us to apprehend the suspects so quickly and provide medical assistance to the two victims,” said LeBlanc.
LeBlanc said the two victims, who are related, suffered separate gunshot wounds in the arm and abdomen.
“Our officers did a great job in providing emergency medical care at the scene until the two people with the gunshot wounds could be transported to a hospital,” said LeBlanc.
LeBlanc has advocated before the Opelousas Board of Aldermen earlier this year to close Club Heels due to what LeBlanc said are numerous incidents which have occurred outside the club.
Following a presentation before the Board, LeBlanc was told by Mayor Julius Alsandor to develop a plan that provides more security for protecting the patrons of the club.
