Press Release: November 7, 2022
According to Sheriff Bobby J. Guidroz, “On October 22, 2022, the St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office received a call from Melville Police Department requesting assistance in regards to a shooting that occurred inside the city limits of Melville.”
Upon arrival, it was learned that Devel Lasean Smith and 2 juveniles were driving around when Devel Smith was flagged down by the victim. As Devel Smith and the victim were standing outside of the vehicle, they began to argue. Both juveniles then exited the vehicle. The 15-year-old juvenile demanded to know why the victim was telling others that he may possibly be involved in crimes that have been occurring in the Melville area. The victim and the 15-year-old juvenile began to argue then the victim was physically struck in the mouth with a handgun by the other juvenile. The victim stated that Devel Smith struck him first and commanded the 15-year-old juvenile to shoot him.
On October 31, 2022, an arrest warrant was issued for Devel Smith for inciting a felony. On November 3, 2022, Devel Lasean Smith was transported to the St. Landry Parish Jail and charged for the arrest warrant issued.
