A 27th Judicial District trial jury convicted an Opelousas man on Thursday for the 2021 death of woman who found dead in.her mobile home located next to the St. Landry Parish Sheriff Department Complex.
Derrick Tyrone Hills, 51, is scheduled to serve a mandatory life sentence for fatally shooting Rachelle Arceneaux three times with an assault-style weapon, according to a press release issued on Friday by the St. Landry Parish District Attorney’s Office.
Authorities were notified of the shooting incident when one of Arceneaux’s daughters who was at home at the time of the shooting, ran to the Sheriff’s Department and notified deputies that her mother had been shot, according to a June, 2021 press release issued by Sheriff Bobby Guidroz.
Guidroz stated in the press release that Arceneaux was apparently unresponsive when deputies arrived at the residence where she lived with her daughters.
The press release issued by Guidroz indicated that Hills was located by authorities at the home of his brother in Rapides Parish five hours after the shooting incident. Hills was briefly held on fugitive charges in Alexandria on June 24, 2021 before being transferred back to St. Landry Parish where he was charged in connection with the murder of Arceneaux.
