The construction of a new volunteer fire department building in Arnaudville scheduled for completion sometime in 2023 began Friday morning with a symbolic ground-breaking ceremony.

Volunteer Fire Chief Jake Marks told St. Landry Now on Monday that the estimated cost for the 11,000 square-foot building is $1.5 million.

Marks added that funding for the new building originated following the renewal in January of a Fire District 5 and St. Martin Parish 10-year property tax.

Once completed Marks said the new building would allow the volunteer department to better serve the St. Landry Parish areas of Leonville, Arnaudville and Prairie Basse.

Also included in the department response areas of St. Martin Parish are Henderson, Cecilia and Breaux Bridge, said Marks.

Construction plans for the new building were approved by the volunteer fire department Board of Directors, Marks said.

Marks noted the currently the department has 20 volunteer firefighters.
