An arrest has been made in regards to the June 28, 2023 shooting that occurred in the rear of the North City Park. A 14 year old male was identified as the shooter and was taken into custody by Opelousas Police Investigators. The suspected shooter was taken into custody just before 07:30 A.M. on today after investigators searched  (2) homes. One home being inside the city limits of Opelousas and the other just outside the incorporated areas of  Opelousas. Opelousas Police were assisted by investigators with the St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office. During the arrest and search investigators recovered (3) firearms one investigators believe may have been used in the commission of the crime.

At approximately 1045 Hrs. Investigators were notified that the 15 year old victim of the shooting had passed away after succumbing to injures sustained in the shooting. We ask the community to keep the family of the victim in their thoughts and prayers.

The 14 year old suspect has been charged with First Degree murder and Armed Robbery with a firearm. He will be held pending a court appearance in juvenile court.

 Chief Leblanc would like to thank all officers and citizens who assisted in the investigation which resulted in a timely arrest of the offender. The support of the community is one of the greatest assets that the Opelousas Police Department has in solving these violent crimes. The department continues to ask for the support of the community in helping make our community a safer place to live.
